Sounds like masochism at best or outright suicide on the 717’s ops-tempo. But that sounds perfect on the other metal for a worn-in ACMI mook like myself. Especially if one is hired into the Amazon flying only to see it disappear down the road.

And with that said, what does it take to get a call these days? I thought I might hear something by now. Mid thirties, 9500 TT, 2500 PIC-J, with WB Boeing INTL PIC experience and a ton of crossings. 135 time in the trenches to boot. I don’t think I’m anything special by any means, but I’ve been around for a minute at this point.

Do I need a local rabbi, or do I need to find a candy bar with a golden ticket, or what? Should I have checked the “willing to relocate” box?
One issue I could see here for someone hired middle-late into the freight growth, is if Amazon doesn’t renew, is there even going to be a place for them on the passenger side? Losing 12+ (up to 40 or 50) possible planes could leave an astronomical amount of people without anywhere for the company to place them… or would we just have insane amounts of overstaffing and ridiculous commutes for those freight only pilots? Was this ever talked about?

Contract is for what 6-8 years? I think on paper the Amazon operation is only going to be less than 200 pilots total. At the current rate there will be close to 200 retirements in 8yrs.

First world problems in a lot of ways. Could be an opportunity for PESLs/ESLs

That’s a good way to look at it. Thanks

I'm slow on the uptake. What does that mean?

Paid early retirement or temporary partial paid leaves, both of which were used/invented during Covid.

PESL= permanent enhanced surfer leave
ESL= enhanced surfer leave (50 hours paid to not work)

With multiple fleet types, it’s cheaper to pay someone to leave (or not fly for a short time) than it is to furlough/displace and retrain everyone.

Just for perspective. HA had by far the worst Covid layoff mitigation plan of all the Legacies. I highly doubt they would offer anything similar if Amazon were to end and create 200 overstaffed positions.

In 8 yrs, with all this online training, short courses, similar operating systems, displacing pilots into 330P or 321 wouldn't be a big deal for HA, especially in 8+yrs the way technology and Ipad distance learning is happening. Plus, I'd be willing to bet retraining a displaced pilot costs far less than the $2-300k most "furloughed" pilots would be making at that time. If they offered PESL's, the top Captains would take it at roughly 50-60% of their 2030 pay. That would roughly $300k/yr by then for 5+ yrs.

If Amazon ends, trust me, we'd furlough. "Ohana" was lost during the 2020-2023 period. It's just a catch phrase at HA. The top floor at Koapaka made sure of that.

Thank you for explaining this to me.

I applied almost 3 weeks ago., and just got an email recently that said "We have begun review of your application and may reach out should we have any follow up questions or need additional information." For those who have applied, what was the next step after this email? and how long did it take to get the next email?

It took me about 3 weeks to get the invitation to interview after that initial email. Should be in your email box soon.
