Hiring 2022
#791
Do you think this trend will continue or might it start to go more senior now the pay is significantly better?
Also, if you are hired into one of the busses, can you upgrade on the 717 as soon as you can hold it, or are you seat locked even when bidding for a command. At my current carrier there is no seat lock preventing bidding from right to left on another aircraft.
Thanks!

No, you are in a training freeze for 24 months unless bidding within your aircraft. That 24 months isn’t increased if upgrading within that 24 months.

I don’t think it will stay as junior as it was recently. The upgrades that were awarded recently at 4-5 months were a result of previous awards having massive amounts of vacancies and one, FOs bidding away and leaving a junior list and two, lots of vacancies pre and post Covid to cover allowing for quick upgrades. I just see it slowing down a bit. Just my opinion.

So if you want the quick upgrade you have to roll the dice and take the 717 as a new hire and hope you dont get stuck on 717 FO pay for 2 years?

Not sure what the formula is for an interview invite. A recommendation seems to go a long way. Never flew with a recent interviewee, but wrote a character rec for him (I was his only rec). He was offered a CJO two days ago (4 days after interview) 1650TT and 150 jet. Started flight school 3.5 years ago and completed OE at Skywest 3 months ago. It’s a brave new world

Part of the reason for pilots being awarded 717CA at 5 months is because of the new hire seat lock. There are pilots on the 321/330 that would take 717CA but can’t. I haven’t heard of a shift yet, but 717 could potentially start to go senior in new hire indoc soon knowing that you will be making $261 an hour year two.

FO pay is the same first year and $130 year 2 on the 71.
you may not have a choice and get “ stuck” anyway. Depends on your last four.
good luck I hope you get stuck somewhere else.

2 years on FO pay before an upgrade is apparently now considered getting stuck? Strange new world....

Apologies, perhaps a bad choice of words. Just trying to collect as much information as possible to make informed decisions.

to be clear, it’s only that initial new hire seat lock that prevents an upgrade to a different aircraft. I think it will stay relatively junior for the time being as I don’t see a whole lot of FOs on other aircraft bidding 717 captain. Most of those that do regret it and are planning on leaving the 717 when their upgrade seat lock is done. Just remember to take the long view when deciding on aircraft and whether to bypass a class date or not. Second year pay on the other aircraft is nothing to sneeze at and the QOL is better than being a junior captain on the 717.
