Hello! Always been a reader, but never a writer to these forums. Over the past few years I am been contemplating throwing an application into Hawaiian. I just noticed the application for First Officers has reopened again and had a few questions for those who work there. Thanks in advance!

1.) I saw the pay increased for 1st year. Are they thinking about also doing hotels for initial new hire? When does Health Insurance start and is it good?
probably not hotels. the only reason for the first year pay increase is because I’m sure the applications went down to unprecedented levels meaning not many applied.

2.) Is there a choice for aircraft in initial or is it pretty much 717 out of the gate?

classes can be for whatever the need is. New hires have been getting everything. 330,321 and 717. Majority are between 717 and 321

3.) What are the schedules like for each fleet and is the QoL okay? Hoping for multi-day trips, versus turns as a junior FO. How are layovers and do you find them often to be shorter, or is there a mix between short and long?

330 has Mix of 2/3 day trips with 20% being 4-5 day, also random charter flights that go all over for 6 days. 321 is mostly 2 days, maybe has 3 day trips. All trips are. One leg out of Hawaii, one back to Hawaii. Like it’s being said 321 is mostly outer island. 330 is mostly HNL. 717 day trips are senior, but now have two day trips and crews don’t like the overnights (only two day) on outer islands usually so it’s junior.

4.) How happy are the employees and flight crews? Does Hawaiian Airlines treat their employees well? I've flown on you all plenty of times and have had great experiences, but my perspective is only outside looking in.

we are the happiest bunch ever bro. Hawaiian treats us wonderful it’s all rainbows all the time.

5.) What are min days off, per month?

12
6.) What are reserve times looking like?
rsv gets worked every day except maybe 330

7.) Upgrade times?

330 -8-9 years
321 6 years
717- 2-3 years
but I’d subtract a year off of both for the hiring needs in the next year.

Thank you all so much! I really appreciate your time! Just looking to find my home. I've always thought Hawaii was that place and have been soul searching these last few months. Just want to make sure this would be a career fit before applying

Default Resume and Interview prep

Any recommendations for which consulting companies are great in preparing for resume reviews and interviews with Hawaiian?

Is the plan to keep the A330s around or phase them out over the next decade as the 787 starts deliveries?

They renewed the leases on some 330s due to the delayed 787. If they keep growing, they have mentioned keeping the 330 longer to grow the airline.

I believe most use Cage Marshall, but I’m sure Emerald Coast or any professional service would be significantly better prep than nothing.

Curious what specifics about HAL’s work rules you would like to see changed? Trying to learn both the good and the bad about HAL compared to majors.

Min day is 4:10, no holiday pay, vacation rules, training pay and credit, premium pick up over pay protection, no long call even with wide body, retirement and retirement medical….

I could go on, our work rules need a lot of attention this time around. Pay is good and I enjoy the people I fly with but it’s definitely not sunshine and rainbows all the time.

and on and on.
lagging in nearly every metric when compared to real airlines that are also hiring right now. People have figured it out and not applying. Welcome to the one base airline in the most expensive place in the USA(arguably) if not the world. And they expect you to pay their paradise tax and work for less your entire career for the opportunity. While expecting you to treat them like family and they fire you for having your own opinion about what you put in your body. Sunshine and rainbows.

Post 2016 new hires:

330: 10-12 yrs (even 15)
321: 7-8 yrs
717: crazy low right now but will prob be 4-5yrs.

IMHO realistically. 2016 was the start of lots of hiring, 2017 had 100+ new hires and this will vastly slow down metrics. Only attractive quality I believe this place has over another major is getting hired directly into a widebody, which up until recently wasn’t likely elsewhere.
