For October: Most junior 717CA got a line, and reserve went senior on the 717FO side, with the bottom 9 pilots as line holders.

Congrats to the ladies and gents that got awarded CA on the latest vacancy. Quite a few were hired this year.

Get hired into a wide body or be a narrow body captain in 5 months. What a time to be an airline pilot!

Yep! Hopefully those who bid out still prioritize 717 gains in the next contract. There shouldn’t be a “pay your dues” aircraft in any airline. There should always be pluses and minuses to flying each aircraft. At the moment there aren’t many clear 717 pluses…

We need stop calling them 717 pilots because that plane won't be around much longer. You either are a HAL pilot or not. Drop the sentimental emotional attachment to the DC9/717 because it is at it's sunset. Trust me. Our largest inter-island competitor is flying shiny, new, larger jets with ample overhead bin space and charging less. The writing is on the wall. People can SAY what they want, the market will drive the replacement for the 717 sooner rather than later. It's business.

Better pay and work rules for ALL OF US. We are our own worst enemy when we carve ourselves into groups. Yeah, that's the way we've always done it... Where have I heard that? We are ONE. Now, make 'em pay. With the pilot shortage, there has never been a better time. Vote NO on anything that does not bring us to a FULL legacy airline contract.

SWA has a Hawaiian interisland carve out. All pilots are under the same contract, but one fleet is not being protected as much as the others at the moment as is reflected in the vacancy. Block time on etops vs it’s equivalent on inter-island does deserve consideration. Pilots operating international flights received compensation when CoVid testing became time burden. Not everything affects all pilots directly, but all pilots should consider how things affect one another. There’s no need to deflect when attention is called to particular parts of the operation.

Hourly pay is based on plane size. That's why ETOPS pays more. The planes are larger. That is how it works. Bigger planes command bigger pay. Now if you want to add a rig, that's doable. More pay for less work. Our inter island people work harder than the average regional pilot. THAT is what should be fixed. We're a Legacy/Major. 6-9 legs a day? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Even the regionals have their daily legs capped.

Equal protection, yes. Special subsidies, no. "Special" deals are why our contract was so sub-par for so long. We are a legacy carrier and need to have a legacy contract that has pay and work rules like a legacy. A 717 pilot should not be making the same as a 787/330 pilot. Maybe close to a 321 pilot, but not more. THAT is where seniority comes in. If you want 330/787 pay... Bid the 787/330.

We are in agreement. You submit to adding a credit boost to boost their days off. You can’t build a two day 8pch two day pairing on etops. So yes we are talking about lifting the 717 wrt the rest. Pay increases will be uniform across the board as they normally are (adjusting for industry standards).

goldbalm, yes, welcome to the new class!

What is the attrition like, is all this hiring for the future or to cover retirements etc?

I received a cjo but need to get some ducks in a row before joining, starting to get nervous that there won’t be any classes left haha

Are they hiring so many people because of attrition?

we are being told the old staffing model we had had us understaffed on every seat/plane, so the hiring is to bring them up to normal levels. There is a new pilot planner and they are telling us it’s in anticipation for 787 deliveries.
But to answer your question attrition is quite low, like 5-10 maybe this last year? I could be off by some numbers but it’s not much.

they could also be hiring just because it seems like the qualified pool is drying up and better to have pilots on property now than have to increase the bonus even more.

Some recently hired have had no pic jet time and no degree and some less than a year at a regional which to me is nuts.
