I’ve been commuting from Maui for the last three years on the 330. Reserve can be a little stressful when they start moving your RAP times around ( starting at 0100 or ending at midnight). We also have some trips that end on Oahu after the last OGG flight leaves, so you’ll have to find somewhere to stay (I just crash in the crew room, not terrible but not ideal). So… doable, but can definitely suck at times.

I’m assuming most civilian applicants are picked up from mainland regionals? I ask as I’m a mid 30s career changer working up to 1500 and my wife has an opportunity to take a job in Hawaii. HAL has been the goal for me since starting the change but I’d hate to move over “too early” and not be able to gain the experience necessary to get my app looked at. Then on the other hand see it as good for networking if living there, especially since she has this job opportunity now… any advice would be great.

Regional is definitely the way to go, but most already have the roots set in Hawaii then either commute or stay mainland for small kine time.
if your wife is moving to Hawaii already you might try Aloha air cargo, that way you can get valuable flight time and live here. I think we’ve hired about 20-30% of their pilot group in the last year or so. Not sure what time the mins are tho but just an idea

yes I agree with Moonwolf, Aloha is a good situation for an opportunity here at Hawaiian, NAC also has a 767 based here. Aloha is hurting as most places for crew. I think you could get hired at 1500 there. they start out at like $85 p/hr.

APA is hiring at 1500, 757, I believe they’re starting around $100k now. Although Aloha/NAC is much higher regarded.

Default Hawaiian pilot bases

Search of Hawaiian pilot jobs showed a hiring for first officers in Las Vegas. any truth to it or just another fake job posting?

PAPA is July 16th I believe. HAL should be there, as well as other industry airlines.

Hawaiian loves to see atleast 1 year of mainland flying...regionals. Aloha is a great company, but I recommend atleast getting 1 year regional first before making the move to Aloha.

Going to the regionals allows for more options down the road, in the event Hawaiian stops hiring. From what I've heard and seen, the 1 year regional experience with 2000 hrs total is a likely ticket to an interview with Hawaiian.
