Southwest is increasing interisland flying, but reducing about 12 routes daily from the west coast.

I haven't heard a Southwest commercial in Hawaii for months. Alaska Airlines has been increasing their advertising a lot more over the past month or so.

Default Commute

Well here it goes. Currently live in the PHX area, wife is an attorney and very well paid. For her job, we could stay here or move to South California. Background: in-laws own a small vacation condo in Waikiki which I could use at any time as a “pad” between commutes.

1. How difficult would a commute from LA be? Seems like a good amount of pax/cargo flights.
2. If I could get A330 (either as a new hire or down the line) could I bid LAX overnights? How long to hold a line on the 321/330?
3. Are any 717 trips commutable?
4. Is there a current commuter clause?
5. If you are a commuter (specifically from the west coast) are you generally happy?

Thanks in advance, we’d absolutely love Hawaiian and to live out there but with her job, we’ll prob push that thought back for at-least another couple years.

1. LA would probably be the easiest out of any mainland destination. Plus we have Long Beach also.
2.if you get 330. Lax is a junior pairing, usually always trips in open time. 321 has some trips to lax and LGB also.
3. No not really. Maybe commute after a week or so of flying.
4. Most are content but nobody is super excited to commute.

4. Commuter policy requires one HA flight or two OAL flights arriving prior to check-in.

Default Resume Building

Looking for advice on how to pursue opportunities to give myself the best chance at getting hired with Hawaiian ASAP.

Around 350TT now having been hired flying a 135 operation right seat multi engine turbine at 300 hours. We fly primarily VFR. 700-800 hours per year is very likely in my current position. I will also have to opportunity to fly night, icing, IFR conditions for 8 weeks during the winter out of DEN.

I have been told at 700 hours, I will be given the opportunity to swap over and fly Caravan VFR only, but as PIC. This will not have much change on the rate of time building I would receive.

At ~800ish hours, I may be given an opportunity to fly right seat in an E145 and fly a LOT more IFR conditions, building 500 hours per year.

My concern with Hawaiian until recently was the poverty wages for first year FO, but I won't have to save as many acorns for the cold first year FO winter pay with the new pay schedule released.

Until other opportunities come up, these are the forks in the road I am anticipating. Whatever will get me into the hot seat for a successful interview with Hawaiian earliest. Is the current 1500TT requirement realistic for someone not military? 1200 or so of it will be turbine, and likely multi engine turbine.

Will it be beneficial for me to get my ATP cert on my own? I'd rather not rely on an employer to provide one for me along with a contract...

Thanks!

Hey, apologies if this has been brought up and i missed it in search. Do you guys have a duty rig or a min day? Specifically Does a 14 hour 5 day sound like a real trip that could be published?

Trip rig= 1 for 3.5 (321/330 only)
Duty rig= 1 for 1.66 (inter island only)
Average daily guarantee= 4:10

14 hour 5 day is impossible. Hypothetical: depart at 12:00 day 1, home at 12:00 day 5= 96 hours TAFB/ 3.5 rig= 27.43 hours

The trips that mostly get affected are the 4 day trips to the east coast and Asia. With schedules constantly changing, we will have 3,4 and 5 day trip mixtures. For example, a 3 day BOS is worth the same credit as a 4 day BOS, because the trip rig doesn't exceed the block time. But a 5 day BOS is worth around 27 hrs, so the trip rig works well on that one.

Some people don't mind that 4 days are less efficient. They get to spend more time on the layover, but not too long away from base.

The lowest credit trip I've seen for a 4 day is one of the Vegas layovers. HNL-LAS-HNL 4 day worth a little north of 18hrs.
