Flight crews losing their luggage is a recurring problem worthy of this tech?

It seems like the airlines are the primary culprit for traveler bags getting lost - their bar code/bag tags and a normal nametag seem like they would be as (or more) effective.

Sure, but if you're like me or a lot of other folks, you have left something in the cabin or cockpit a time or two. And even if there is a name on the bag, most of the time it is left with the gate agent, CPO, or inflight. I've left a uniform hat, iPod, and a headset on different flights before. The hat took 3 weeks to get back, 2 weeks for the iPod, and I never saw the headset again. Yes, it's my fault I lost all these things, but as a former commuter and flying 5 legs a day for a regional carrier, it happens. At least with this there is a chance I will get my stuff back expeditiously. When scanned, I get an automatic email of its current location on a map and any notes left with it. It's pretty cool and for about the price of a regular dumb tag I can get something much better that can actually help.

This would be a good idea for people who are constantly checking bags.

As a crew member I have never lost my baggage or left behind my belongings.

Works good. Last you long time. No unnecessary steps or gimmicks.

If I had the choice between texting someone about their bag or using that QF spot....I would choice to text. That tag just made things harder

You're kind of missing the point of this tag. It has those layers of protection to keep people from looking at my information when they don't need to be and at the same time allowing someone to report when and where they found it without really doing anything other than scanning or touching the tag. It is way easier to touch it to my phone using NFC or scan the QR code than it is to type in a phone number and write a text.

No, it doesn't use any batteries, which is nice that I don't have to worry about charging it. The chip inside is energized when touched to the NFC on a phone. Or you can just scan the QR if you don't have NFC. It cannot actively track your bag, but it does send an automatic email with it's location on a google map when it is read. A person can also leave notes if they left it with the gate agent or in the CPO, for example.
