U-boat commanders are cool. Hipsters are not. Big difference.

Probably "deal with it" the same way as hand flying. Roll the dice, hire ab initios and hope no one will ever need to hand fly, just use the auto pilot all the time.

So, let them grow beards and hope no one ever needs a sealed mask.
Those beards are awfully dashing - just saw a few in Milan. After all, death is a small price to pay for looking good.

It's better to look good than to feel good.

But to your point, extract the ab initio and only count the RAF, Luftwaffe, and other Euro military pilots hired. Do they suck?

It would interesting to see a study done of how effective the mask is without facial hair versus with it. That way we could just stick to arguing about professional appearance

This is not true. I have the results from several mask fit tests given to me from the Air Force taken with a beard due to a medical condition. All passed in the normal zone. I have been through the gas chamber and the mask worked just fine, and I have worn issued O2 masks with no leaks.

I was considering applying to the airlines, but now I am not sure that I can anymore due to this issue.

This is true. We did numerous formal and informal experiments with the O2 mask in the AF. Beards make no difference at all and they sealed each time.

If you all want beards then email Richard Anderson, Doug Parker, and Oscar Munoz. Tell them you're a regional pilot and you want to have a beard at work and the only way the rules will change will be if it starts at the majors.

I personally don't like beards. They itch and are a chore to maintain. But they are NOT a safety issue.

The military doesn't allow beards for grooming standards. There is an old concept of sealing chemical weapons masks but that doesn't apply either. It's a grooming standard that the military adopted which applies to everyone including pilots.

The airlines get much of their culture from the military and the no beards policy is part of that. I'm not sure at what point the airlines started to use the O2 mask as an excuse, but it has nothing to do with it.

I have had a beard for the last 7 years. I keep it trimmed and nice. This bites. Hope it changes by the time I reach a regional in the next 2 years

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting...its been this way forever and it ain't changing. Periodically, the noise on the issue comes and goes.

It's not just the airlines, most corporates have a similar policy.
