They thought all of the planes would be relatively close to the surface, and hoped that they were full of water....so that when frozen, they would be uncrushable.
Unfortunately, being over 200 feet below the surface, and NOT full of frozen water, they were crushed. The B-17s, in addition to being crushed, were also pulled apart by glacial movement.
The initial investors thought they would get eight P-38s (I think that's the right number) worth about $6-8 million each.
Instead, I read it cost $4-6 million to restore Glacier Gal, and that is why they never went back for the rest.
