I am not anti FFDO. I participated in the program for ten years. My only comment towards the FFDO program was that their defensive tactics training is woefully inadequate. But then again most police departments have pitiful DT training and many cops lack the desire to properly train in DT.
FFDO's and now the Cops are lacking? I guess we all better hit the weight room or pack our own H&K.
For the most part, if there's a disturbance in the cabin, we fly the plane, let the F/A's get some 'able-bodies' to assist. If pass riding or deadheading feel free to help out.
Yes, a high % of the passengers would be of no help, but others live for that sort of stuff.

And the "weight room" is not where you learn this stuff, just FYI.

In all honesty I actually would have their training include a bit of training on how to deal with disturbed people. I've seen the few great gate agents but I've also seen some that just fan the flames of annoyed people.
Let's not revisit the "last line of defense" FFDO debate here, there is a nice thread anybody can resurrect:

Pilots for some unknown reason, tend to think that they are tough and should command respect with their "awesome" authority. They tend to think that their mere presence will cause a loudmouth idiot to wilt when they appear on the scene. They also tend to approach a potentially bad situation with hands down, chest out, and chin held high, all of which are not the right things to do in a possible physical altercation. When idiot boy doesn't respect your authority, make sure that you have a plan in place.
Firstly, to command respect, you approach the situation wearing your hat. Double blind studies have consistently shown that in the same situation with the same people, the hat wearer has the tactical advantage. Also, sunglasses that hides your eyes helps. (I recommend Rayban Aviators). No hat? You're SOL. Unless....
Secondly, I have mastered the first 9 editions of Street Fighter and am close to mastering the 10th. I suggest that anyone interested in self-defense follow in my footsteps.
