Charter and Corporate is often full of day trips. You may have a day where you fly 2 hours total and wait for 10 or more.
As far as overnights, sometimes I have only time to eat and sleep. I have however, been able to do some cool stuff. I have been able to do things I wouldn't have gotten to otherwise. It all depends on the schedule of the passnegers for a given trip. You may have some freedom, but in the end, you are still working. You have to be ready for plans to change.

It depends on what you fly. Corporate, cargo, airline, short-haul or long-haul.

Most of my trips are one leg about 7-8 hours long to Europe or South America. I'll spend 24 hours in the hotel in whatever city, eating, drinking and enjoying the sights. Then I fly the 8-9 hour flight back and I go home.

This week I'm in Vegas then Orlando and then I go home. More work, but warmer weather. I'm off to the Hilton to see the Star Trek Experience and eat at Quark's restaurant.

Not a bad gig, except the whole living out of a suitcase for 8 months out of the year =)

They are hiring, but it's very competitive. I had 12,000 hours, three type ratings, and a master's degree when I got hired. They do hire with less though.
