Default Medicare Costs For 2016

Due to a small clause in the Social Security law, millions of people are in for a shock in 2016 on their Medicare premiums. The provision in the law is called "hold harmless" and basically says that if there is no COLA for Social Security, your Medicare premium will remain at the 2015 rate. Of course there is always an exception to any law. Anyone who does not have their Medicare premium deducted from their Social Security check will have their premium rise from $104.90 to $159.30. Any one signing up for Medicare in 2016 will pay the new base rate of $159.30. And, of course, high income folks will not be held harmless and will see a surcharge, called the Income Related Monthly Medicare Adjustment (IRMMA), of $118 to $223 based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income added to their base premium. This is an increase in the 2015 IRMMA rates of $42 and $104.90; a 280% and 212% increase.
Congress is going to try to fix this but I wouldn't hold my breath
