Default B-17 with exotic painting

I share with you some photos of a Boeing B-17 bomber with an exotic and unusual camouflage. Does anyone know if this plane entered service and what the function of this painting? I count on your visit.

Something like that was usually a test bed for optics and/or a training lead ship for teaching formation flying or anti-aircraft gunnery.

These were actually called "formation ships" or "assembly ships", and orbited over the bases while the rest of bomber formations in WWII took off and formed up before pressing on with the mission.

They wanted them to be easily visually identifiable.
