Proposal for “economy class cabin hexagon”

New plane cabin could force passengers to make eye contact

A new in-flight seating plan aims to make better use of cabin space - but would see passengers forced to face one another during a flight.

The designs, proposed by Zodiac Seats France, the airline industry supplier, feature alternating forward and backward facing seats placed side by side. They were revealed last month following a patent application filed to the World Intellectual Property Organization in December.

Airbus proposed a saddle-like plane seat with smaller armrests and no headrests or cushions, aimed at creating a more streamlined, lighter aircraft with room for more people.

“In all cases, this increase in the number of seats is achieved to the detriment of the comfort of the passengers,” the patent read.

Earlier this year, Spring Airlines, the Chinese budget carrier, made a new bid for the airline to be able to offer cut-price tickets to passengers willing to stand. Similar schemes have been proposed by other low-cost carriers – notably Ryanair.

And what could possibly go wrong with this idea? It won't work in the U.S. due to pax size problems.

I have stopped all non essential airline flying since they have started cramming the seats together. No more flying to vacation destinations or other get aways such trips for dinner, visiting family and friends, reunions, Etc. I even refused to pick up an airplane with a friend recently as I would have ridden in one of the sardine can seats. It would actually be more comfortable to stand for a large portion of a trip. It seems the only thing that will stop this nonsense is customer backlash, by not flying.

Not to mention being in the window seat and trying to evacuate; there is no walking space to get to the isle. This would never pass FAA testing for evacuation, so people shouldn't be worried.
