Default China Confronts US Spy Plane

It's been a long time since I was impressed by anything put out by CNN, but this is an excellent report with some amazing footage.

Things are getting dangerous in the South China sea...be sure to watch the embedded video...

Thanks Alt,

This must be a first. Manufacture an artificial island to initially control airspace then land aircraft.

Where's Green Peace now...lol

Dredging 24/7, that's just one piece of a very expensive operation, (all partially financed by American purchased and imported goods).

This looks a lot like a certain Battlefield 4 map called "Parcel Storm."

But all that aside, it looks like the Chinese are desperate to expand their holdings, especially if they can drill for anything around those islands they built.

Might as well stop at the front door then, and turn around

Far beyond that...they want the entire south china sea, a claim grossly in excess of established international convention. They will probably eventually build a chain of artificial atolls and even moored structures to provide a seamless series of "sovereign territory" on which to bolster their claims.

They can claim all the want...the real question is how hard will they dare to back the claims and who will be willing to stand up to them?

"Who will stand up to them?"

Probably no one, as long as the shipping lanes stay open. The Chinese always act out of a playbook that chases policy objectives that won't reach fruition for decades, maybe a hundred years. I don't think they are stupid enough to want a shooting war that would quickly sweep up everyone in the region.

They want something. They can get it through diplomacy, but diplomacy is not an option if no one is afraid of you. They have a gun in one hand, and the other is beckoning everyone to be reasonable.

All true, especially the long-term view. They don't WANT an armed conflict, the question is how far are they going to push our military and economic allies in the region? Probably as far as they can get away with, which depends on the political climate in the west...and their ability to correctly assess where the red-lines lie (I'm talking about real red-lines, not the ones employed by the current administration which are simply points of debarkation for retreat).
