No worries. But I figured that for the 10 seconds of noise it was just to much trouble to move the bed.

Ludicrous' is my biggest hotel pet peeve too. There is a line whether you're there or on hold. Yes, we have all been there. I respect the concept of waiting my turn, so I have no problem wih waiting whether I am on hold or there in person. That's as black and white as it gets.

Another is when housekeeping calls to see if you want your room cleaned.....because they didn't want to knock due to the DND sign This tends to happen at foreign hotels.

Speaking of foreign hotels....what's up with the aversion to washcloths? I always carry one or two of my own, just in case.....

Look at the phone call versus the line stander this way:

Line standers are already guaranteed customers; they are not going to walk away, so minimal service.

Callers are prospective customers who may well hang up and go to the next hotel on the list, so instant service.

We may not like it, but from a sales perspective, it makes complete sense.

Pretty big leap to assume all callers are prospective customers and just seeking to find a room.

There are a lot of other reasons calls are made to hotels by guests already checked in and those that stay at a specific hotel on a regular basis. Folks are always going to have a biased view based on if they are on hold or standing in a line. Just a fact.

1. Closet-sized rooms; no A/C; window that doesn't open; and modular can/shower units in common area. One flush per door opening; shower timer. (Formula 1, Paris – cheap employer's choice).

2. Hotels that call themselves “international,” and “intercontinental” but don't serve breakfast at 21:00 local or anything else to eat for that matter after 23:00; don't have shuttle service at 02:00 – e.g., to a restaurant that's open; close the pool and the gym at night; have no staff at night to provide even basic services.

BTW, I used to bring a garbage bag for my clothes to keep out the cucaracha.
