She talks about buying her daughter's wedding dress, so I take it her daughter is on her"own".

The author of the article is disingenuous at best. Even she herself acknowledged that the key to her survival is "because I know it won't be forever. I'll have my degree in two more years, and I'll go back to work." We have ALL been poor at one time or another. Most of us were poor college students, but we knew that if we worked hard, we could get a decent paying job and hopefully lift ourselves out of this abyss. Some people do well then encounter temporary (or permanent) setbacks such as a medical problem, a job loss, or a divorce. People who are vulnerable to begin with do not need much more to tip them over the edge into poverty, hunger and homelessness.
Note also that she proudly proclaims to choose to be poor. Most sane and rational people do not choose to be poor; they usually are poor through no fault of their own. She has alimony, which is pretty steady if the ex-husband is not a jerkoff. And she did not mention the real possibility of living on things already in her possession before she made The Choice.
