It is true, I have taken student to specific airports because I knew their restaurants were good.

Generally grill steak or chicken. Plus add some kind of green veggie or frozen veggies. Also add cheese, celery, pickles, carrots or some kind of fruit. Lunch meats work well too. If you want to make sandwiches you can usually poach mustard/mayo packets at the sandwich stands and get some bread every day from the free breakfast at the hotel.
Most of the hotels will have fridges with freezer sections so I carry blue ice. If I don't have a freezer section the hotel will usually put the blue ice in their freezer. Failing that I double up on gallon freezer bags and put ice in that and the blue ice in my roller. It works well in a pinch and the double bagging prevents sweating.

I'm sure it has been said somewhere in the other few pages.....
I used to bring Tuna packs, bagels, canned chicken, precooked grilled chicken, granola bars (before cliff bars were around)... Bear Naked granola.....
Day 1 I would bring some leftovers and cook them during a hub turn... Also bananas, fruit etc....
Try to get a real meal at least a few times a trip....
Back in the regional days I could get away with $20 spent on a 4 day trip depending on how much I left in ops fridge..
You definitely don't want to be eating Popeyes in ATL every day!!!

I find a set of BBQ tongs and a roll of aluminum foil fits nicely in my roller board. I put a slice of cheese between two pieces of bread, wrap it in foil, and hold it up to the APU exhaust using the tongs. Boom! Instant Grilled Cheese sandwich.
On holidays I kick it up a notch by slow roasting a small Cornish Hen. I wrap it in the foil with some root vegetables I plucked near an adjacent taxiway and then place it snugly in the hydraulic system 3/Cargo Fire Extinguisher access compartment on the right side of the CRJ700. After several cycles the skin is crispy and the meat falls off the bone.

I always loved flying at 410 and the guy I'm flying with is pointing to some spot on the ground every 15 minutes or so saying "You see down there by the brown field, right where it meets the road next to the water tower? Man there is an outstanding burger joint down there..."
