The swastika is seen in some very old religious or cultural books, I first saw it in an old Indian classic (Puranas or Vedas). It had nothing to do with racism, it was more like an inverted horseshoe for good luck. The Nazis were fond of "borrowing" (ie. stealing) cultural elements from other cultures, and while a symbol may have been ok at some point it may not be ok now and sensitivity to context should be exercised. What astonishes me given this, is how common we still see individuals and groups trotting out established inflammatory flags and symbols as though there will be no blowback. It's almost as if they are testing the waters to see what they can get away with.
