The older I get and the more my income increases, the more interest I have in quality over frugality. I've gone cheap and regretted it so many times, I'm now willing to go a little higher end on some things. I just got a new car with a leather-wrapped steering wheel that I initially thought "big freaking deal", but boy does it ever feel nice.
I'm just waiting for SkyHigh to chime in with the "time value" study on the $60 logbook. I'll make my decision based on the outcome of that.

there are certain things I just don't skimp on..... shoes is a good example. I mean, my feet deserve the absolute best shoe for the hours I have to wear them. So I pay upwards of $350 for a pair of Mephisto rubber sole work shoes, instead of the usual $59-$99 black rubber sole shoe. Why?
-far more comfort
-lasts 3-4x as long
-not made in China by slave laborers! (France, so not much better! )
-orthopedic

I don't think I'm quite ready to spend $350 for a set of shoes/ boots, but at $180 I'm not too far away. Like aero said the more my income increases the more I'm willing to spend on quality. I learned the hard way working the ramp that good quality boots are essential! BTW When I got my boots from the local army navy store they where top of the line, can't say I'd know where to get a $350 pair of work shoes from. If they last 3-4 times as long though I'd probably be interested, since I have already resoled my boots once now, and they're getting ready to be done again. The uppers being all genuine leather are holding up really well, and most importantly they're very comfortable!
BTW I think I am also going to get an electronic log book on top of my traditional log book since it'll make the math and breaking thinks down SO much easier! I came to this conclusion after spending all day Saturday working on my log book, finishing it out for the year, and going through everything and correcting errors. So hopefully next year when I go through my log book it will match my electronic log book.

Hey, I'm not being a pr!ck, just playing devils advocate. I barely made 18k this past year, but I did manage to go through my last Jepp log in just over 2 years. Thats #2 ans still no problems, just started #3. I understand that there are other people here, I didn't mean to offend anyone...
The point is, why buy a mercedes when a toyota will do and you can still eat. I mean, its not like you are getting a kia and working for gojets....

New US study: Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the safest car in the USA
The E-Class offers the best occupant safety of all passengers cars registered in the USA. That was the conclusion reached by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) after extensive accident analysis. Between 2000 and 2003, they looked at how many drivers were killed in road accidents. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class obtained the best results of all the models examined: it accounts for ten fatal accidents a year for every million vehicles registered. The comparable average figure for all passenger cars is almost nine times higher than the E-Class. The results from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class are equally impressive. With a score of 25, the S-Class is the safest car in the "Luxury Class, very large" category. The practical Mercedes-Benz safety concept is based on analysing real-world accidents and defines vehicle safety as a whole, ranging from accident prevention by means of electronic assistance systems through occupant protection that adapts to the severity of the impact, to allowing passengers to be rescued as quickly as possible after an accident. text: Mercedes-Benz

So rather than knock something because you can't afford it, and that is a whole different topic about how underpaid pilots are... just say, "cool, hopefully one day I'll make enough to be able to afford that."
Anyway, I hold no grudges!
