Wings of Dreams
Wings of Dreams is a non-profit venture of mine, something I have wanted to do for many years. I was inspired once by a child with Down's syndrome who visited our flight deck prior to departure. He was fascinated with aviation and was thrilled to meet the pilots and see the flight deck. It dawned on me that moment, that while we complain about this and that, there are many children and young adults who share the same fascination with flying that we do, yet due to medical reasons, will never be able to pursue their dreams, much less fly an airplane. He was the inspiration behind Wings of Dreams.
There are a few organizations that take kids flying, but what I envision with Wings is much different. To provide much more than just a flying experience for children and young adults with disabilities. To provide an outlet for them to share the passion of flying and all things air and space that we all share. Through a volunteer network of aircraft owners and pilots, we can open the door to aviation to many of these kids and young adults who would otherwise never experience such an opportunity. Through partnerships with other other foundations, I envision a volunteer air corps, to not only provide Dream flights but also services to those who cannot obtain it otherwise. I envision a network of volunteer professional pilots to provide friendships and mentoring, to establish local and national programs, providing education, awareness and aviation fun for those who it will benefit.
This is a monumental undertaking and a daunting task, but the effort will be well worth the reward. To brighten a child's day and improve their mental health, even if just for a few hours, will be something I think can we all can appreciate.
While Wings of Dreams will be seeking volunteer pilots and aircraft across the nation, the first task is to develop the establishment as 501 (c)3 non-profit organization, which I have already obtained legal counsel for such purpose. Establishing the organization structure, anticipated budget, website, advertising, corporate sponsorships and partnerships as well as partnerships with other organizations. As you can see, I have my work cut out.

I have had a similar idea. I work at my flight school and have briefly talked with the owner about doing flights for a local camp dedicated to kids fighting cancer, my son is 9 years in remission. The camp is a couple hours bus ride away from Boise, Idaho and I want to try to put a flight together for those campers that the trip might be too taxing for. It would give them the trill of flying, plus save them the exhaustion of a trip they may not be physically up for and still get them to camp so they can forget about the fight they face, if only for a few days.

I flew for this organization one year. It was definitely rewarding and many of the people that participate (pilots and kids) repeat year after year. Great organization.
