That is what the marketing people want you to think!

The Boeing system of customer codes has not changed. In the example of 747-800s built for Atlas (or 747-8 in marketing speak), the airplanes are designated 747-87UF. For comparison, a 747-400 built for Atlas is a 747-47UF.

"7U" is Boeing's customer code for Atlas. "F" is freighter, adding an extra character in both cases.

I have met a few marketing people that I respected. But just a few. And McNerney is a blot on the face of humanity. So aviation tradition and the proud history of Boeing lead me to thinking of it as a 747-800.

Love the 747. Would hate to see it go!

Boeing clearing has the "freight" market, aka 747 all series, 777, 757
I think Lufthansa and Korean are the only airlines who ordered the PAX version. And Korean cancelled theirs. I am surprised Boeing went through with the 747-8.

Korean just added to their order, for a total of 10 8i's and then 7 freighters.

Must have been someone else then, but I read someone backed out on their 747-8 orders.

The pax version of the 74 may be falling out of favor with airlines, but the freight ramps worldwide are full of 747 freighters. No other plane has the lift or the volume of the 74 so they may remain in favor with shippers for some time to come.

Atlas cancelled an order for three early -8's but took delivery of the remaining 9 from their initial order.

Korean already has 3 freighters with 4 freighters and the 10 pax planes to go.

In addition to 9 VIP pax 747-8's there are 4 airlines operating the 8i: Lufthansa, Korean, Arik Air, and Air China.

Thanks. I may have been thinking of a different airline, or perhaps the 787. I don't usually get a chance to catch up on my news until it is later in the evening and am exhausted.

Do they all have 748's on the line ? I really thought DLH was the only airline operating them currently.

Another very fine journalist, no reason, facts or anything of meaning except his feelings.

Using his logic Airbus would cease production of the 380 also, just another big wasteful jet according to the writer's dithering.
