Hmm.... why is a guy with the macho handle "USMCFLYR" reading "Yahoo Shine - Women's Lifestyle" blog???

As a thought experiment, try to imagine the impossibility of the events in this story happening in a dues paying private library--as opposed to a "free" government library.

WTH? How would it be any different?

You guys are something else!

Read the article - this kid "claims" he is reading more than 10 books a week... on the "honor" system, and the woman who interviews him to make sure he is actually reading grade-appropriate books asks questions like "who was your favorite character." Moreover, the woman who "verifies" how many books he has read is the one who is complaining, after she "established a special relationship with the ... boys, who call her 'Gram,' because they are frequent visitors to the library... between the two brothers, they have borrowed 1,000 books in the past few years."

So, the kid's adult friend says "this kid is the best look how many books he reads" to keep him on top and funnel him prizes, and the kid wants the free stuff. The head librarian got sick of it, knowing he is likely a fraud, so said let's just distribute rewards for the kids who are coming to reading club to stop people from inflating numbers and "reading" short books.

As with many things in life, the full story sounds more reasonable. Non-event in my book. But, I don't read over 10 per week.

Macho is being in touch with your *other* side
You didn't see the movie Heartbreak Ridge did you?

What you got out of the article is that the kid is a fraud?
Hmmmmmmm.

I tried to get in touch with my feminine side and it sued me for sexual harassment.

Yes, definitely smells of fraud. I have hung around lots of kids, from highly to less talented, and none read 10 books in a week for long stretches of time; if they could they should just go on to more challenging books. You guys of all people should realize the incentive a "number of books read prize" presents.

That article was like some lay publication ranting: "All pilots are equal, instead of having the BEST pilots promoted! They just use time on line, so even the worst pilot will ultimately be a captain if he can last long enough, while a truly talented individual can't rise to the top! We have to pretend we're all equal so the less talented pilots won't be offended! Communism! Everybody gets a trophy. In this day and age everybody gets to be captain! They should just have a contest and whoever does best in school or on practicals gets to have the best jobs. Punishing success! I've had enough with this everybody gets a trophy bs."

Do you really think this kid read that amount of mentally stimulating, quality books? If so, I have a bridge to sell you...

You can keep your bridge - and maybe even give a bridge to all the kids

Well...you can have your opinion, but I've seen enough of the every kid gets a trophy syndrome.
