1946 Globe Swift (for the last 13 years)
1947 Stinson 108-1 (owned for 6 years, but sold two years ago)

Wonderful experience to own your own plane.

Default 150 cheaper than a snowmobile

I think that my 150 is cheaper than most boats or other motorized hobbies. A 152 where I live now costs $108/hour plus tax. Cheaper to own.

I'm just a lowly 135 pilot, but I own a EAA Biplane. Not much range, not much speed, but fun to mess around with in the pattern.

I was about to get all huffy with you.

Are you describing me? I have a 182. But I doubt you were my instructor.

Seriously though, an older 182 can be found in Trade-a-plane for a reasonable sum, and annuals/maint are not THAT bad. I don't even keep track how much I spend anymore as it is depressing, but the trickle of small bills that come in are less than some people spend on golf. I was very close to getting a Cirrus SR20 but decided I simply could not justify the expense.

I would second what every other person says, and only get a plane if you are going to USE it. If not, it becomes a really expensive recurrent item like that gym membership you never use. However, the freedom to visit your relatives 500 miles away without a grueling drive is indeed priceless.

Do you like to ride motorcycles, but don't want to die when a drunk in a Cadillac hits you?

Do you like to fly, but can't afford a Bonanza?

Well now you can do both, at the same time! Check this thing out, looks like a flying Harley to me, costs less than a real Harley, and I could launch it from my back yard.

I should just start buying some Sitka Wood and building a frame in my garage, haha. Why buy a plane when I can build one...aside from the fact I don't trust my own engineering and I'd be signing my own death wish.... yea.

Thumbs up

1955 C-170B. 7gals/hour, kayak, bike, camping gear, hunting, fishing machine. Faster than my pickup, better gas mileage, a whole lot more fun. Who needs speed when you just want to be flying.

Lots of guys who didn't know squat about building airplanes have built some very nice RV's. You'll learn as you go. Here's a quick build kit:

http://www.vansaircraft.com/public/kits-qb.htm

There are a zillion other kits out there, all you have to do is bolt them together.

A buddy just flew his new SeaRey onto my lake two days ago, after he built it, very pretty airplane! He left Florida yesterday morning and will be home in NJ this afternoon.

I don't know what he spent on it, obviously you can really go nutz and spend a bundle if you want to, but my point was, you can also go super cheap and build that little Cloudster for about $15K. Yes, they also have kits, all you need is time and a lot of glue!
