And regarding a .22, for some reason its some of the most sought after ammo at the moment and it's very hard to find on a shelf. A friend of mine works for a million sq ft True Value distribution center and last week he sent me a pic of some Remington .22/box of 500 they had received a few pallets of and....the ammo was made in England! They had to import .22 ammo because its so scarce.

I would second the comment about the revolvers. I used to conceal a Walther .380, but then switched to a S&W 38 revolver due to having my Walther occasionally jam on me on the range. The 38 is very easy to carry. Furthermore, I could not imagine a situation where I would have to use the 38 and need more than five rounds.
I also have a H&K .45 which is awesome but far too big to carry. They have a compact series - I would check out their compact .40 or .45. You might have to go used on those though as I think they run $900. The quality of the H&K is great, it shoots very accurate and it's the only semi-auto I've shot that's never once jammed.
Good luck!

17 rounds is great for Hollywood, but in the real world the average rounds shot in a gun fight is 2. The average distance is about 5 feet.
FBI studies concluded that shot placement is the only factor that matters; not caliber, type of round (hollow point, etc), or grain. You got to hit them in the right spot.
A 5 round revolver is fine. A 7 round compact pistol is fine. Get good ammo. Get good training. Nothing wrong with more rounds or fancy ammo, but work on shot placement first. A good combat course that gets your adrenaline up is good. Shooting at a paper target under relaxed conditions does not prepare you for a gun fight. I've never shot anyone, but I've been shot at twice. If you can't handle it physically or mentally, don't carry a gun.
Never had a pistol jam on good ammo. Did have a jam on reloads. I was trying to save money target shooting. Don't.

I my experience, what's fun to shoot (and shoot well) and what you can easily carry concealed are likely not the same weapon. My favorite to shoot is still the Glock 17, I can regularly shoot tight groups and ammo used to be relatively inexpensive. But, I conceal carry a Glock 27 (.40) because it's a trade-off between concealment, knock down and controllability. Neither of those live in my nightstand. My home defense weapon is a Glock 21 (.45) or Remington 870 shotgun. Bottom line is shoot everything you can get your hands on and buy what you like and what you can afford. But beware, if you like to shoot it can get addictive and your collection can grow quickly!

Nextlife has some very good words of wisdom there.
My two cents.
Find a shooting range that rents handguns. Many ranges do. There you can shoot a variety of weapons you'd like to purchase.
I own Glocks and Springfields. Both are great weapons. With the Springfield, don't go cheap and buy the XD, get the XDm.

To back-up the .22 comment, I've been looking around locally for the last 3 weeks, and no one has .22LR's for my dang rifles. I'm trying to pluck off Starlings(aka flying crap factories) and I'm down to my last 30rds.
I've also been looking around for handguns, but I'm not sure I'm going to conceal carry, mainly home defense because I farm for a living and there is no way it'd carry doing any of that.
I'm also entertaining a shotgun, but a 12-gauge intimidates my wife, so I need to look/research smaller models and get her to shoot some. Any recommendations?
