If I cut out the leafy green items and veggies, how much can I lose?

The Atkins diet is anti-bread, anti-carb, and it works pretty well, but you get really tired of it after a while. Sugars and carbs are what we love in food. I never thought I would crave just having a good piece of bread until did Atkins for a while. Cutting down on buns like Ricks says is a good idea, especially when it the kind of cheap Wonder-bread sold at most restaurants and fast food joints. Eat the whole thing when it is actually good bread. The thing I like about these burgers on the Dairy Board website is the buns appear to be hand-made.

Seriously though, burgers like that are ok in moderation but that is an incredible amount of saturated fat, lipids, sodium, etc. Not that great for your long term health even if you are somebody that exercises a lot and burns off the calories. Try to limit the bad stuff to occasional treats 2-3 times per week and have better foods including salads, greens, chicken or leaner meat etc. as your staples.
Very tough to eat right being on the road a lot, I know.

Just met with my MD for a follow up and I said I was on Atkins. According to him, the fat was not the worst part of the diet, but as a certain type of intestinal bacteria breaks down the red meat, it produces some byproducts that increase arterial inflammation which is worser. CardioMD - your thoughts?

However the net effect is the same, whether it is bacteria producing the bad effects of red meat, or the red meat itself, the fact remains eating a lot of red meat is generally not good for you, and this has been shown in essentially all populations.
Maybe in the future we will have genetically-engineered cows with special red meat , but until then I would still avoid excess. Try limiting the meat to 3 times per week, you may notice you feel a bit better too, a good way of dropping calories.
