FAA CLOSING 173 Control towers
#61
Many 121 flights already operate from "uncontrolled" fields. All you need is security and for the fire Dept. to show up. I'd be just as or more concerned with folks busting the void time clearances this is sure to generate, if it happens. Other than that, like Galaxy flier was inferring, brush up on the non tower Ops. and remember not all those aircraft will even have a radio... BTW, I have had just as many near misses or high pucker factor in class D airspace as non towered.

Maybe, maybe not! if the nation's airspace have few problems with the towers closed why open them back up if savings are the point of the closings. My understanding are the cutting of aviation projects or easier than cutting highway projects. Highway projects are controlled by some sort of congressional mandate.

If the tower at our airfield closes (and it's on the list), I can virtually guarantee there will be a BIG increase in safety issues. Several busy flight schools plus lots of low time GA pilots does not make for a safe uncontrolled flight environment. I've been flying out of there since '01, before it became a towered field, and the difference was night and day (to use an analogy).
Is this preventable? Yes. Does the branch of gov't responsible want to prevent it (and lots like it)? Absolutely not.

I don't think the towers should close. No matter what cuts the federal government needs to make, the safety of air travel should never be compromised. The cuts need to be made elsewhere. Too bad they won't look elsewhere.
They're using fear tactics to turn this country against each other more than they already are.

This comment is disingenuous. The towers will close because it's what the White House wants, plain and simple. Nobody in the FAA wants this, excepting maybe the Administrator.

I'm sure the administrator probably doesn't WANT it - but he has his own marching orders.
