They've been trying to do something, anything to save it for decades. Pity, unbelievable design, classified for many years. Read "A Man and His Ship" about the designer and its construction. I saw it one afternoon, as a 10-year old, from the deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Solent.

Pretty sure it was higher than that. She could go faster in reverse than most ships can go forward.

From a SS United States site: Speed: The Big U was capable of attaining 44.7 knots, which equates to over 50 mph. Cruising speed was between 30 and 33 knots. The SS United States was the fastest ship afloat in her day, and is the fastest object of her size ever built. It is interesting to note that the SS United States was capable of traveling at 25 knots in reverse, roughly Titanic's forward top speed.

Remember, it was built with the idea of it being a troopship in mind. WW II saw the Cunarders as very valuable for trooping and pretty safe. The last ship used for trooping was Canberra during the Falklands war.
