The upcoming pilot shortage is only a myth, propagated mainly by a conglomeration of ailing flight schools and shoddy regional airlines which stand on the brink of collapse. Heed it not, for you will be in for a harsh awakening!

I just sat next to a captain at Hawaiian a week ago who told me there is going to be a shortage and urged me to start building up my hours to get my instrument rating. I talked to a captain from Alaska about 2 years ago who told me a shortage was coming as well. My point being, there are pilots in the industry who think one is coming. From everything I've read from most on this forum however, I'm not holding my breath for a "huge shortage."

Even if a shortage did materialize somehow, it will pop up years away from today, and the airlines are doing whatever they can mean while to soften its impact. Myself, I have a hard time buying that any shortage will ensue given that this shortage fairy-tale has been in the works for over thirty years until now.
