Arrow My captain was so cheap...

He had me-- a probationary crewmember making $24,000/year-- buy all the drinks and food for the week. He was giving me IOE, so (as he viewed it) that was the least I could do in return. Cheap ba$tard.

What's your story of a cheap captain?

Maybe he's testing your CRM and assertiveness as a new FO to see if you'd tell him to shove it

Either way, sounds like this needs to be in the TOTD thread

That's not cheap. That's either extortion or the cost of doing business, depending on how you look at it.

Cheap is the guy who brings his dead AA batteries and lightbulbs from home and swaps them out for the ones in his hotel room.

Just wow.

On my IOE, I tried to buy my Captain a beer on the last night of the tour to say thanks and he refused to let me buy anything!

You couldn't have told him hell no? I would have right after I told him to shove it!

I was on probation, as such I picked my battles that first year. Telling a senior check airman to "shove it" wasn't one of them.

Default Shameless cut and paste

My captain was so cheap
- his hearing aid has a solar battery
- he takes off his glasses when he's not looking at anything
- he rides a crowded subway just to get his clothes pressed
- he married a skinny girl so he could buy a smaller ring
- he named himself as beneficiary in his will
- he's still waiting for the Bible to come out in paperback
- he recycles belly button lint
- he won't even tip his hat
- the guest room in his house has a pay smoke alarm
- he's worn his suits so long, they've been in style 4 times

A simple "Sorry, can't afford it" would suffice on the first day. What would you have said if you only had $20 in your account, and no credit card? I sure hope you wouldn't have overdrafted...

I wouldn't go out to eat or drink with him any other nights. "Sorry, have a headache."

You have to pick your battles for sure, but don't let anyone take money off your family's table. And if the company fires you for something like that, then you surely didn't want to work for them anyway, right?

I'm pretty sure if it's an airline, your chief pilot would not be too happy with this check airman if he knew what was going on.

Pick your battles, and this is one to fight. Or just avoid. What if he wanted to sleep with your wife?

That's the most unheard of thing I ever heard of.
