Personally, I work with high speed aluminum tubing.

Back in the day, one of the units I was with had a standard cover story that we were in town for the Zamboni driver's convention.

On a ELP layover the whole crew was having beverages in the bar at happy hour. Some guys came up and asked us what we were doing in ELP. We told them we were engineers getting ready to build a subway around ELP. They believed it and were very enthusiastic about the idea. Of course, looking back on it, they may have been thinking we were building it for the import market.

I'm not trying to remove anyone from blame, but are you sure it wasn't station personnel?

Maybe it's changed, but the same thing happened to me years ago, and I was surprised to find that it was the station guys (I think it was in SYR)-- who had permission to power up the aircraft -- who left the battery switch on and delayed us that morning. The station manager showed me the checklist they had and everything. Too, bad they missed the last step.
