I like pilots in general in that we (as a group) are generally not babble-heads. A comfortable silence works fine, unlike some other work groups to whom even 2 seconds of silence is death; there must be continuous talk at all times.

This I think connects to what you are talking about in that there are exceptions, and some guys feel like they have to talk to everybody they see and know, even if it's an inconvenience to you.

The easiest escape method - make the "telephone" signal with your hand, and pull out your phone. "Got to make a couple of calls." Then head on your merry way to some private area to read, sleep, eat, whatever.
There are few things as headache inducing as getting in a hotel van at 0430 that is filled with chatty cart mules. It is truly amazing the mundane things that they can so spiritedly debate at that hour of the morning.

Is "cat rancher" not in fashion any longer?

The fact that we're chatty is due to two reasons:
(at least for the female variety of FA)

1) females are generally more verbal than males, and

2) flight attendants actually have personalities.

sorry, but I just couldn't resist.....

Sorry LNL, but last I checked having a personality wasn't an FAA requirement for my license.

Come on... I know FA's have nicknames for us... Feel free to use them!

Agree. It is the nature of women to chat, which is why I dread our "cleaning lady day." Lovely woman, but I am NOT your girlfriend. I don't need to know about your neighbor's annoying dog, as you don't need to know about my compressor stalls the previous day.

Not so sure on this one. I don't think anyone that's been in the biz for 20+ years has much of any personality left at all.

The only nicknames I use for my pilots are sweetie and honey.....

Some women (who are aviation geeks like me) would love to hear about your compressor stall. Not so sure about the cleaning lady, though!)

I've only been in the business about 5 years, so I'll get back to you in 15 years.....

So long as they aren't waiting for the van ride to talk on their phone I'm fine with it. Talking face to face is all well and good, it's the cell phone chatter that drives me nuts. Can't you wait 11 minutes to call someone?

If you feel the same have your fellow pilot call your phone when you sit down in the van. Answer it then say loudly "Sorry I can't talk right now. I'm in the hotel van. I'll call you back after I check in."

Works great.
