Not that far back, believe it or not. CO had ghost riders on Colgan flights out of EWR when they started that operation back in 2/08. (I knew since I had been a gate agent there and used to see them flying back and forth).

I am nonrevving home on SWA (thanks for the ride) IN uniform, the plane is half empty (rare). I have my suitcase and my brainbag. I get to the front of the line and the gate agent has me check my suitcase (to be recovered in baggage claim). I mentioned that the flight was half empty, but relented without a struggle. Everyone had a row to themselves and there were tons of empty overhead bins.

It was a minor annoyance, and seemed out of place, in kind of a no cognac and breadsticks way.

He wasn't a tool per se, it just seemed oddly small picture.
If you think that's bad, you would really love MEM gate agents. They make sure you gate check your 22 inch suitcase on RJ flights regardless of the flight load even when you're deadheading.

IMO, gate checking for an RJ is standard practice. Not so for a half full 737.

Yes, I do understand that. And thus I never once complained or said anything about it. However, one could at least be polite about it

That's what happens when NBC buys The Weather Channel. I'm sorry, but Al Roker is not a meteorologist.
