Because he probably voiced an opinion he disagrees with.

That's how it works now it seems like.

You buy your own underwear don’t you?
Imagine getting flattened on the ramp by a catering truck because you were too cheap to buy a $4.95 vest.
What’s gonna be on your headstone?

“ Can you see me now?”

That’s an utterly moronic post.

Maybe a one off design like the "Electric Horseman" had would solve this once and for all.

The AF needs people like you to make and enforce more reflective belt policies. That's totally what should happen.

After having done a little catching up on current events, I would venture to say that you are correct.

Well, not necessarily Republic FO’s. However the Hi Viz Vest Fashion police exist all over the world. A verbal is the norm. However, in the UK, don’t be shocked if a caution is issued as they take your details. Repeat offenders can face fines and disciplinary actions.

Australian Airports are more conservative when it comes to safety. You must wear Ear Defenders, which are ear muffs to prevent damage to the ears due to high decibels.

I have no issues with the enforcement for the purposes of enhancement of safety.

Some foreign carriers issued us Hi Viz Vests as part of our uniform allotments. Some carriers maintained Hi Viz Vests in the cockpit. Simple fix wsa to ACARS the company to have a spare brought out the aircraft if one has gone missing or unusable.

No dramas nor drama queens to complain about how much of a fashion disaster to the uniform the vest looks.

If it's required for your job maybe your company should pay for it

Purchase the vest, and submit an expense reimbursement form.

If one does not want to pull a de-feathered quarter from their pocket, as an alternative, if one is strapped for the $5.00, is to list themselves with GO FUND ME.

flensr 10-31-2018 12:24 PM

Spirit doesn't want to pay the fines so all of the NK aircraft have a reflective vest onboard and company policy is to wear them during all walkarounds no matter where or when. Nobody I ever talked to minds wearing them, it's considered part of the job no big deal. If NK can afford to put them on all aircraft and train their employees to wear them, I'm pretty sure any other airline can figure it out too.

They do require that pilots procure and carry their own flashlights, but that's because people are far more likely to steal a nice flashlight than a reflective vest.

vessbot 10-31-2018 12:40 PM

I wonder what the Venn diagram looks like between the anti vest crowd, and those that pop their shoulder harness during rotation.

Ducttape 10-31-2018 12:55 PM

I have no clue why this is an issue.

If the plane doesn’t have a safety vest and it’s required for destination, fill out an ASAP or safety report. A few of those and there will be safety vests popping up in planes (assuming the safety department/committee is good and the FAA rep who oversees ASAPs isn’t asleep)

If it isn’t required, either don’t wear one or bring your own for added safety.

Really that simple.

I steal reflective vests. I have a whole closet full of them I sell them on ebay for $4.95. Want to buy one?

Will you give me a price break? Two for $10.00?

Never pop your shoulder harness during rotation. It might snag on your safety vest. :D

Dolphinflyer 10-31-2018 02:24 PM

Just get it over with.
Match the vest with a new pilot uniform, orange jumpsuit with "Convict" printed on the back and make us pick up FOD while doing the exterior preflight.

You don't already pick up FOD during exterior inspection?

As part of the walk around inspection some don’t like nails in their tire... just saying.

Yea that was my point. I usually nab anywhere from 1 to 6 bits of FOD during my walkaround, usually broken zipper pulls but it's included just about everything you can imagine, including drink cans that have been run over several times so it's obvious they've been on the ramp for quite a while.

A flattened soda can could easily get lifted and sucked in and would cause quite a bit of damage.

Anyone who changes their voice, cadence, accent, speed of speech or changes wording for a checklist. Stop it. Now. Also, at least look at it. That’s the point. I’m glad you have it memorized. Good job. However, read it.

Lots of places... One of my proudest (hey at least I admit it) new FO moments was clearly communicating the presence of an aluminum can bouncing around in the safety zone right in front of the #2 engine in time for the CA to shut the motor down before we shelled out the motor. He was probably going to shut it down anyhow but maybe he shut it down earlier? Who knows, but I'm taking credit for it. It's the little victories when you're a probie. Like getting in and out of LGA without getting teased on ground, or going a whole 4-day without making a PA on ops freq or calling for push over the PA.

Small victories. Maybe tomorrow will be slightly less tool-ish.

Maybe it's also a bit like why the USAF doesn't permit LAHSO... It benefits everyone except the crew that's put at risk doing the landing, increases the chance of botching the landing or violating the LAHSO clearance, etc. Let someone else absorb that risk or build another runway.

Not being snarky, I understand that accepting LAHSO is part of being a good neighbor at an over-capacity airport but it puts the risk of high volume ATC ops right in the cockpit of the LAHSO participant. I can totally see why any particular company might refuse to accept that risk.

Any US 121 carriers have the LAHSO in their OPs Specs?
