If you want to judge, mock us JetBlue pilots and our blue overcoats. Talk about a clown show. |

It’s a jacket, dude... Nothing more. Most airlines authorize it. SWA rocks the north face jacket, Alaska has that weird brown thing, and most companies still authorize the leather. Why complain? How does this affect your day to day operations? As I’ve seen, there are plenty of trashy d-bags that look like crap in the blazer. The last United guy I jumpseated with looked like a bag full of smashed a33holes in his 20 year-old, weathered jacket. Just saying. There are better things we can fight about.

I'll say this, on the crj I hate when people have the leather jacket. It filled up our tiny joke of a closet and I'm left hanging my blazer in a pile in the corner.

The guy in his black jeep nearly going on two wheels as he cut me off turning into Jetblue University a few days ago. Embry-Riddle license plate, ray bans and blasting top gun soundtrack for all to hear.
Forget coats and earbuds. This one tops them all.. |

At the end of the day, I’ll bet the pax would rather have pilot that flies good, while wearing his/her leather jacket, rather than one that I wouldn’t trust to drive the turd hearse near an airplane, while wearing his/her blazer. |

It’s not about Blazer vs leather jacket. It’s about flasher TRENCHCOAT vs leather jacket. When it’s -20 I’m not going to sit out there waiting for the van in my blazer. So the uniform policy allows for flasher coat, or leather coat. I know which one I’m picking!!

not the gold framed classic aviators anymore....all the kool kids are wearing the retro wayfarers, apparently. 'Gubment paid for me to have some creepy looking prescription shades with square lenses 15 years ago so I'm sticking with them until they fall apart, although they aren't quite TOTD worthy.

I wear the coat that keeps me warm, I wear the sunglasses that shield my eyes. I have worn a beard, but found it to be uncomfortable so I shaved it off. I wear a $30 Timex watch that tells time just fine. I seek neither mirrors nor approval.
In others, slovenly bothers me, as does flamboyant, but not much else does. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Judge not. |

TOTD: anyone who hovers their hand over the flap handle and the gear lever. I'm not impressed that you too know the flap/gear speeds.

At 1500 AGL another, less direct verbal reminder is ignored. Then as you mentally prepare for the go-around and just before the GPWS warning he realizes his mistake and starts screaming for the gear. Then when you get on the ground he turns it around on you for "inadequate monitoring" and "lack of assertiveness".

I'll do that if the other guy seems oblivious to the imminent need for gear, several flaps, and a checklist right about the time approach is going to give me some instructions and a handoff.

It's certainly a two way street. I treat everyone like they know what they're doing until they prove otherwise or the situation is almost to the point that it can't be unf---ed. "Hover handers" are treating people the opposite way and showing it in a very distracting way. From either seat.

Also when the hand comes out, I purposefully (but safely) delay even further. I accidentally bugged a speed below a min speed the other day and the captain very calmly said after going slightly below "hey man how about some more flaps?" "DOH! Yes please" he replied with "almost had that perfect flight I was rootin for ya!" Great guy and handled my mess up the right way IMO. |

So I like looking outside, and I will leave my hand on the flap lever so I can extend/retract without having to go look for the handle. I think (hope?) most of the people I fly with get the point when I brief "if you fly, you fly. if I REALLY want something different, I will say something". If you fly with "hand-hover-as-a-hint" make them do something that requires them to move the hand. Also, definitely, hover back when they fly. Can still remember the guy getting really annoyed with me keeping my hand on the gear handle the whole 30 mile final, but it was worth it. (I know, passive aggressive) |

On the flip side of the coin, I was conducting line training with a new F/O. He gripped the Gear Lever before V1, to which I commanded, “Remove your hand from the G/L”. We discussed the matter once in cruise with the SOPs in hand. Once back at base, in briefing room, I had individual explained the importance of following SOPs, CRM and perils of uncommanded actions undertaken and or performed by the PM. |
