Always thought these people were a joke until my limo driver on a Vancouver overnight had the flat earth conversation with me. The captain was definitely grateful to have chosen the back seat.

A friend's new boyfriend was at our Halloween party last month, he was a firm flat-earther. I literally just had to walk away.

Many great scientific discoveries were inadvertent (Big Bang, penicillin, etc.). The results of this experiment may be similar. While attempting to prove the earth is flat, he may unintentionally provide proof for the theory of natural selection.

Though yes he is proving that his genes are not worth passing on :D Im gonna contest that the big bang theory of cosmology was an inadvertent discovery. Rather the discovery that the galaxies were receding at a rate proportional to there distance was perhaps inadvertent. But to build the big bang itself, that required a lot of work. It needed Einstiens theory of relativity (general), tons of additional observations, and now even incorporates particle physics (for the early universe). In an odd twist, Einstien initially worked to prove a static universe and added a constant to his equation to show it. He later regretted this move and called it his biggest blunder. Interesting though the constant has been reapplied but for a different purpose.

Not looking to start an argument, but if we are to rip on the flat earthers for their blatant ignorance, we gotta make sure we are absolutely accurate as well :cool:

Was referring to Cosmic Microwave Background radiation discovered by Wilson and Penzias accidentally in 1964, for which they won the Nobel. At the time the static cosmology model was still competing with the Big Bang.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Einstein was working to figure things out. Much like climate change, there is no longer any figuring out to be done with respect to a flat Earth. Either you accept that it's round or you choose to be a nincompoop

Im not comparing anything. Rather Cougar made a statement that could be viewed as in accurate. And yes it is true that Penzias and Wilson inadvertently discovered the CMB. It is also true that it was theoretically predicetd well in advance of their discovery. That is they key here, let me explain.

A key aspect to good science is the ability to collect facts and then make predictions based on those facts. Even if the prediction turns out false, we will have still learned something about those facts (they may be incomplete, or even not relevant). So what predictions do our friends who believe the earth is flat make? None from what I can see. So their “facts” need to be re-evaluated or put to a test.

Its funny that the flat earthers use pseudoscience to make there point. Thats cool and all (silly if you ask me), but they dont make solid predictions that others may verify. Not only other individuals but other branches of science. Its no suprise that a spherical earth (oblate spheroid) is veried by astronomy, geophysics, and to some extent by us as pilots. There is no cross reference in a flat earth model.

Maybe not TOTD, but how about pet-peeve of the day. Two pilots who struck up a conversation while jsing in cabin seats, speaking loudly while a FA was doing the safety demo right next to them.

Same would apply if they were FAs in those seats.

Nothing beats breathing deeply into the intercom during the oxy demo.:D
