I hope you're just trolling. If you can't see how throwing someone who gets their @ss up at 3 AM to come to airport and deal with a bunch of cranky passengers and crews some spare change or even an entire dollar (God help us) once in awhile, I don't know what to tell you.

Are you talking about the Starbucks worker or airline pilots and (more importantly) flight attendants? I don't know how the pay scale compares for a regional airline's flight attendant versus a Starbucks "barrista," but I'm thinking the FA has to be up at 3 am to deal with a bunch of cranky passengers and (s)he are trapped in a metal tube with them. Seems by your logic there should be a tip jar at the front galley.

Fast food establishments are very useful if you are traveling and need food quickly. Their menus often consist of low quality fare but it is reasonably priced and portable food to go.

The tip jar at Starbucks, no idea.

;)

Yup, basically he is saying anyone that has to get up early and deal with people, deserves a tip jar.

I absolutely believe if a passenger feels a flight attendant is giving them good service they should feel free to tip. I worked at Starbucks during college, if someone threw something in the tip jar I would always politely say thank you. It felt good that somebody recognized we were working hard to get everyone caffeinated and on their way as quickly as possible. When someone didn't tip I didn't notice, usually we were too busy doing something else.

I have never understood why some people are so touchy about tipping. If you want to tip, tip. If you don't, don't. It's not that big of a deal. Was checking into a hotel recently and my Captain was able to talk the front desk into free breakfast because we had to wait a couple minutes for our rooms. Met him for breakfast the next morning and I decided to throw the waitress a couple more bucks than would be customary considering our free meal. The guy I was with gave me a hard time for leaving extra. I guess he thought I was making him look cheap. I hadn't noticed how much he'd given because it's none of my business and I don't really care.

Getting back to the poster's point, I just don't really see why a tip jar is anything to write home about. No one is going to think any less of you if you don't tip, and if you do, that extra hundred dollars at the end of the month is a nice little bonus to someone who might be struggling to make rent or just wants to have a fun night out with their friends.

That's a fine observation sir. I guess I dislike the idea of carrying around a french press and grounds.

Well there is your problem...dont carry grounds. Carry whole beans and use a burr grinder in flight to get the freshest grind possible. :)

I don't think a gun is being held to the F/A'a or *bucks head. They both have the option of quitting.

A mechanic once told me if you could see the inside of a potable water tank, you'd never drink airplane coffee again.

Maybe not on a brand new plane, but a 757 built in 1985...God only knows if it's ever been replaced. I visualized a metal walled tank with long strands of vegetation swaying in the water like a video of an underwater camera shot of seaweed in the ocean.

Think old fish tank at an old lady's house. With a few dead fish and one that's just praying for it.

Kills those nastybad germs.

As far as buying someone's coffee or drinks or dinner, it is my gift, not my obligation.

As far as tipping, filling a cup and/or ringing up my purchase does not rise to that level and I find the expectation it does to be arrogant and self aggrandizing.

As far as shaming me into tipping someone undeserving of a tip based upon their need, who the hell are you to decide for me who most needs my money?

Tipping used to be for extraordinary service, now it's a form of wage supplement for small business owners.

Europeans have this all figured out: Pay your waitstaff a decent wage. Tips are not expected.

Frogwater

Several years ago, I remember this same topic was floating around, (no pun intended) and I commented then, so I'll share my memories of making coffee with airplane water again. I used to make coffee with airplane water when I was fairly new (I'm retired now) until the night the cleaners came on board and removed the containers and I heard a "ewwwwwww!" Guess what they found?..... A frog! He was well cooked and floating there in the top of the container. That was when I got a good look at the inside of the container(s). After that, I carried a thermos and the nice ladies at the cafeteria, before food courts became so prevalent, would take the time to bring the tap water to a boil and fill my thermos. Good luck to all.

I like our model...tip is expected, but I can defer on that if the service sucks.

As for Europeans....service typically sucks..

You jest, but there is a Virgin American pilot that does carry a French press around with fancy coffee. Apparently he is a pretty nice guy though.

Flew with a Capt who did just that. Carried his own drip coffee maker and a small cooler for French vanilla and half and half. His viewpoint was "Screw it. I live half my life on the road so I'm not going to forgo my own comforts."

It helped that the company we worked for bought tickets to and from the job. He traveled with four bags and would always threaten travel that he was going to check all four bags if they didn't book him first class. Zero sh!ts given....

I'm guessing this isn't Captain Happy from SWA! :p

Kind of a strange thing to do, but I'll give him points for being good looking! :D

Dolphinflyer 04-18-2017 12:07 PM

What's the problem? I always grab cool stuff off the belt loader to play with during a walk around. Pogo sticks, short putting course around a/c footprint and puppies in kennels.

Guy sounds good, but just imagine the media #$%^ storm rain down if even a minor incident happened after a "show". (I guess he could be a pass/jumpseat rider though)

badflaps 04-18-2017 01:00 PM

I almost was late for departure when I stumbled on a hay rack full of occupied puppy cages. Changes your day.

Green Squirrel 04-18-2017 06:57 PM

The guy scrolling through his phone while in the pilot sleep room. Turn off your phone in the sleep room! It's meant to be quiet and dark in there! You don't realize how bright your phone really is.

I nominate the Delta Captain who came up before boarding and did a 5 minute "pre departure announcement" in the gate area. Tool. His clearly memorized speech had some real bombs of jokes too.

No. Would it have mattered if I did? He's still a tool. I've been on the Jumpseat on many a tools airplanes.

BiloxiJack 04-19-2017 05:13 AM

Yeah man oh wow what a tool... not.. is it really so bad that someone is putting themselves out there at work and creating a positive customer experience (especially at a time when every turn of the channel seems to spotlight a new negative customer experience)? I've always been the quiet; reserved pilot that evidently is the "right way to not be a tool/professional" according to this a thread but I wish I had it in me to be a little more outgoing like this guy. Pretty good cover of the song too.

Referencing swa pilot playing guitar.
