Just take the boards and wings off. Takes me 10 seconds. Then I just look like a Walmart security guard.

A pilot uniform is a costume, designed to inspire a sense of confidence in aunt bessie, and a sense of intimidation in belligerent drunks. Diving to/from work I'll hang up the shirt in the back, and throw on a light jacket if I need to stop somewhere. More for comfort though, and to avoid the "are you a pilot" inquiries... |
I am way too lazy and care far too less what others think (in this case judgy pilots on the interwebz) to disrobe out of the uniform for a stop by the grocery store on the way home. I have one thing in mind at that point, and it is getting home to my wife and kids.
I never minded the "are you a pilot" inquiries. That's an easy smile, "yes," and carry on. When I taught in the sims, the lanyard said "Delta Pilot Training." The amount of times I got "oh good luck, I hope that works out for you!" was pretty funny. Once or twice I was like "oh, I actually give the training," but for the most part it was just a "thanks, me too." |
Quick stop at the gas station, grocery store, drug store, etc. on your way to/from the airport? Not toolish if you happen to be in uniform.
Loitering around the food court at the mall mid-afternoon with a Jamba Juice in full uniform? Extremely toolish. But in all cases, loose the hat! On that, I think we can all agree. |
I remember an ol' timey movie where the pilot wore his uni to the country club dance. Right then and there I said "That's for me."

Seriously? I don't care what anyone thinks of me in my uniform. I've stopped by many stores and restaurants both to and from work. Most people are oblivious and don't notice, and the ones who do are usually nice and sometimes just curious.

Calling out light chop and asking for wind checks is pretty risky work, I suppose. |

Do they really have ERAU school rings?
I think all class rings are toolish, just my opinion. I just dont understand why a 4 year degree is something you always need a constant reminder of, always there to look at on your finger. |

Is "***" really being censored on this site?
Edit: Ok... that's ridiculous. TOTD to APC for "asterisking" the three letters "W" "T" "F" |

He couldn't count the number of times he would be waiting on the curb in front of the terminal for a hotel van, and a passenger would drop his bags at his feet saying, "I'm going to Orlando (or wherever)..." |

Haven't checked snopes, but there was a legend at our airline. Black Captain with crew waiting for PU, guy drops bags, tips him well. CA bought every round at hotel. Probably same story at PA/DL/AA/US/BN/EA/.......on and on. As for uniform, too lazy to remove crap outside hat and uniform coat for quick stops or eats.(Tie and ID are optional). Some here seem to have some mental condition about the slightest display outside the airport such as quick stops. I am in agreement about guys wearing the full uniform at longer functions for no other reason than personal vanity. |

Outside the old terminal in DTW in my NWA uniform with hat.
Woman: "Officer, that car has been sitting there for over twenty minutes, and my husband needs a place to pick me up. Please make him move!" Me: "I'm not a police officer" Woman (chuckling): "Yes you are. Make him move!" My captain: "That's why I don't wear my hat" |

Award goes to the FO of Delta 2680 on 7 feb who was being a radio bully to a regional flight that was just telling ground that they were runnin on one engine. FO said "we're all very proud of you" in a sarcastic tone. LiveATC.net LGA ground around 8:30pm. Very unbecoming of a delta pilot.
