My wife and daughter (lap child) were going to get the last open seat on a flight home. At the last min a pilot walks up and requests the jumpseat.
As the gate agent is listing him he changes his mind and asks if there are any open seats in the back. The agent says that there is one but she is trying to get more people on. He decides that he doesn't want to sit in the jumpseat and wants the seat in the back, bumping my wife and kid.

As far as using an "unofficial power play" for personal travel... If you truly believe this is happening, there are ways to to check and see if said inspector is authorized to be there.

try me sbd, I'll pm you my schedule. You've truly turned to the dark side with that attitude, which is kinda sad. Maybe you ought to stay!
if said inspector walked up as the poster claims, what do you call it? If you're official, I have NO beef.

I guess they dont understand how fee for departure works for THEIR company, and whose paint is on the plane, and book the pax.
People who do this ARE TOOL OF THE DAY. But for every tool, will be another tool to do it to them when they are trying to get home.
The company controls how many they sell on a flight, we control the cockpit jumpseat. The cockpit jumpseat is not a crutch for positive space seats and the companys mistakes, you start letting it be, and they will factor that in to how they book flights, and soon make it a contract item for deadheads.

I call it a possible change in plans last minute, and didn't have time to list. It happens.

This is an industry disease. I love when its an RJ guy, like CHQ on a CHQ flight in lets say AA paint, they are on a positive space ticket with a seat in the back, and an AA pilot wants the JS on their full flight, and the positive space CHQ guy takes the jumpseat and bumps the AA guy to get another pax in the back. All the while saying they are doing it to help their company.

Is there a Statute of Limitations for how long ago? Because if not, I nominate myself again.
When I was a new captain about 5 years before the turn of the century, I was briefing the lead F/A (or attempted same) who was a SEA 34-Long bra size. I got about three words out, and she says, "Listen, sonny. I have three times the seniority of you and your little copilot over there combined, so let me tell you how this is going to go".
I said, "Yes, Ma'am, I'm listening".
Tool or not?

It was when he started talking smack about UA pilots in the Summer of 2000, specifically me, for not accepting a direct routing. That's when I decided that I was going to do everything I could to make him understand the error of his ways.
Tool of the day, even if it was 12 years ago.
