Glass Cockpit Survey

Glass Cockpit Survey
I am conducting a simple survey for an undergraduate research paper I am currently writing. I have some general questions I would like to ask all of you pilots out there with experience in, or who have recently transitioned to, glass cockpits in any type aircraft. Feel free to answer any or all questions as you please. Do not be afraid to elaborate, the more information the better. I will continue to add questions and edit the survey as necessary. Participation and information are strictly voluntary.
1.What type of glass avionics package do you use (Garmin, Avidyne, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, etc.)?
2.What type of aircraft do you fly that are equipped with this system(s)?
3.What kind of operations are you primarily engaged in with this aircraft (part 61, 91, 121, 135, 141, etc.)?
4.If part 61 or 91, do you own or rent this aircraft?
5.What do you like most about the glass system you use?
6.What are your dislikes?
7.Did you go through any special training while transitioning to glass, such as Flight Training Devices, simulators, etc.? Feel free to include details regarding who conducted the training, location, and your experiences there.
8.How about training software? If so, what kind?
9.If you were ever stuck with a decision to rent or purchase an aircraft with glass avionics vs. one with the traditional six pack, which did you choose and why?
10.For those of you who are IFR rated, do you feel a greater sense of confidence and security flying IFR with glass avionics vs. the traditional steam gauges?
11.Do you ever find yourself on an IFR trip with glass avionics that you would not normally make with traditional avionics?
12.For you CFII’s, do you generally find it easier for a student to transition from traditional instruments to glass or the other way around?
13.Have you had any maintenance issues with your glass avionics package?
Any other information or experiences you would like to share would be very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to participate in my survey. I do appreciate your input.

Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, etc. would be great too. I'll edit the original post to include that. Any info you can provide will be very helpful and very much appreciated. I understand the 757 and 767 have very similar cockpits. Did the company you work for train you on both initially or did you train in one and transition to the other later? How easy/difficult was it for you to make the initial transition and how often do you now transition between the two?
Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your input.
It was worse on the 737. The -300 models are steam gauge, the -500 models were half glass like the 757/767, and the NG's: -700,-800,& -900 were all glass. You can fly all of them in one day, so it was fun. Once you're trained in a Boeing it's easy to transition to other Boeings. Hopefully I'll fly the 777 and 787 soon.
I've used glass since the '80's in corporate aircraft, turbo-prop airliners, regional jets, and Boeing aircraft, so it is pretty easy to fly anything "instrument" wise.

1.What type of glass avionics package do you use (Garmin, Avidyne, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, etc.)?
Primus Epic
2.What type of aircraft do you fly that are equipped with this system(s)?
Embraer 170
3.What kind of operations are you primarily engaged in with this aircraft (part 61, 91, 121, 135, 141, etc.)?
121
4.If part 61 or 91, do you own or rent this aircraft?
5.What do you like most about the glass system you use?
ergonomic, and easy to use
6.What are your dislikes?
Way too many bugs!!!! Honeywell should be slapped...
7.Did you go through any special training while transitioning to glass, such as Flight Training Devices, simulators, etc.? Feel free to include details regarding who conducted the training, location, and your experiences there.
Nope.....just standard aircraft-specific training per regs
8.How about training software? If so, what kind?
nope
9.If you were ever stuck with a decision to rent or purchase an aircraft with glass avionics vs. one with the traditional six pack, which did you choose and why?
depends what I was going to use it for. A travelling plane would be decked out, a play bird would have the bare minimums $$$
10.For those of you who are IFR rated, do you feel a greater sense of confidence and security flying IFR with glass avionics vs. the traditional steam gauges?
No, but the increased info is a great HELP
11.Do you ever find yourself on an IFR trip with glass avionics that you would not normally make with traditional avionics?
nope
12.For you CFII’s, do you generally find it easier for a student to transition from traditional instruments to glass or the other way around?
not a CFII but airline instructor. Some folks just take a while not to be overwhelmed by the info and are able to sift through the info to get what they need and use the features
13.Have you had any maintenance issues with your glass avionics package?
yes, honywell programmers who appear to work drunk
Any other information or experiences you would like to share would be very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to participate in my survey. I do appreciate your input.

1.What type of glass avionics package do you use (Garmin, Avidyne, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, etc.)?
Garmin and Avidyne
2.What type of aircraft do you fly that are equipped with this system(s)?
172, 182, DA-40, G-36, SR-22
3.What kind of operations are you primarily engaged in with this aircraft (part 61, 91, 121, 135, 141, etc.)?
61, 91, and 141
4.If part 61 or 91, do you own or rent this aircraft?
Instruct
5.What do you like most about the glass system you use?
Situational awareness
6.What are your dislikes?
Difficulty getting to some features like weather graphics, G-1000 without A/P lacks flight director, Garmin allows each manufacturer to set up specific settings like user profiles (Cessna doesn't allow them), and checklists. Differences in redundancy and backup systems from brand to brand. Easy to get lost in the system/fixate on it during critical phases of flight.
7.Did you go through any special training while transitioning to glass, such as Flight Training Devices, simulators, etc.? Feel free to include details regarding who conducted the training, location, and your experiences there.
Part 141/Fits course for the G-1000. Our school was the first to have a 141 certified program in the country and do factory training for a number of manufacturers. The instructor knows that system like the back of his hand.
8.How about training software? If so, what kind?
Have some but found sitting in the plane with the power cart hooked up to be best training aid.
9.If you were ever stuck with a decision to rent or purchase an aircraft with glass avionics vs. one with the traditional six pack, which did you choose and why?
GLASS- Situational awareness is much better, much easier in a single-pilot environment if you're familiar with the system.
10.For those of you who are IFR rated, do you feel a greater sense of confidence and security flying IFR with glass avionics vs. the traditional steam gauges?
Anything TAA/Glass is better than old school.
11.Do you ever find yourself on an IFR trip with glass avionics that you would not normally make with traditional avionics?
Redundancy makes aircraft more capable, as a result you have to take this into consideration.
12.For you CFII’s, do you generally find it easier for a student to transition from traditional instruments to glass or the other way around?
For people that are familiar with the Garmin 430/530 the G-1000 comes pretty easy because it has a lot of the same systems logic. Anybody that is familiar with GPS usage usually has a relatively painless transistion (we require a four flight checkout before solo flight is allowed and that helps too)
13.Have you had any maintenance issues with your glass avionics package?
Some software gliches like GPS updates not uploading right or loosing the XM radio/wx (inconvinience more than anything).
Any other information or experiences you would like to share would be very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to participate in my survey. I do appreciate your input.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know more.
