Fly Boys

Another good one - Pushing Tin
Although it's not from the pilot side of flying, Pushing Tin was a pretty good movie. I liked seeing the Air Traffic Controller side of things. The plot itself got more into personal lives and shenanigans, but I thought the ATC environment was presented very well.

The movie started out great, but got lost in the last half. It could have been better.

While "Fly Boys" was "inspired" by the actions of the Laffette Escadrill (I`m sure I spelled that wrong) none of the characters were "real" persons. The main character was modeled after Frank Luke, a young guy from Arizona, the so called "Balloon Buster" who ended up busting his a$$. There were no black pilots in any air force in the "Great War"...pure Hollywood. The lion was modeled after a "real' character, but there were actually two lions.."Wiskey" and "Soda". Not a great movie, but an interesting way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Wanna see a pretty good airplane movie? Go and find "The Hunters", a movie about Sabres vs MIGs in Korea, with Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner or possibly "The War Lover" , again with Robert Wagner and Steve McQueen, B-17s in Europe.

I liked Flyboys...
After watching the trailer I too thought it was going to be a flop because of the graphics(guy running on the durigable as it blows up). After watching it I was impressed. Even after reading about the actors and the real parts of the story I think it was a good movie.

The ending was kinda disapointing, but I guess thats what made it even better, without a warm and fuzzy ending...maybe they made an alternate ending!

Flyboys wasn't too bad, but I did go into it with low expectations. Even though it wasn't a cinematic masterpiece, it did a decent job of telling the story of the Lafayette Escadrille and World War I flying...and there were some pretty cool aerial engagements. A flying movie I really like and nobody's mentioned yet is Hell's Angels.

"Only Angels Have Wings" with Cary Grant (can be seen occationally on Turner Classic). Its about a small, struggling mail carrier in South America in the '20s/'30s.
For your reading pleasure, try some of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's work. Many folks have heard of his book "The Little Prince," but few knew he was a well traveled flyier in the 30's. I cannot recall the names of the books I have read, but his stories showed me just how easy flying is today. (The stories I read have an "mountains, fog, and engine failures: just part of the job" feeling)

If I recall, The Great Waldo Pepper was a good flying film. I remember being really freaked out when they killed the guy who was stuck under the plane when it caught fire rather than let him burn. Also, I really have always liked Flight of the Intruder. I love liked Willem Dafoe's character. "Iron hand's my thing man."
Has anyone ever seen the most expensive film of its' time, Hells Angels, the Howard Hughes film? That is supposed to have some great, real flying scenes in it.
