Rememberence
In another thread, someone asked that we remember those serving overseas.
It is a nice thought.
But I feel the sentiment falls far short of the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve in distant land. Those who have enlisted have chosen to SERVE their country. They have given their best years to insure that our Constitution is upheld.
Indeed, shake the hand of a vet.
But better yet, volunteer for service, or if you are too old, volunteer in your community. And suggest to your kids they enlist.
70% of kids today are physically ineligible for service. Of the remaining 30%, only 3% decide to enlist. We who serve (or served) ARE THE ONE PERCENT.
I, for one, do not expect everyone to take up arms; but I DO expect people to serve their community. Be a volunteer firefighter, file papers at the police station, or serve at a soup kitchen regularly (not just at Thanksgiving).
We who are blessed, have a duty to help those who aren't. Help those who need it, and (unless you are in a war zone) ask nothing of it.
We are a community. WE need to take care of our brethren. No hand outs, just hand ups. But EVERYONE of us needs to put some time in to help the community.
So, ask yourself, "What have you done to improve your community?" If you have to think of an answer, you haven't done enough.
I continue to serve, but I will NEVER have done enough.
Buy American. Pray to your god. Serve your community. Mentor a kid. That is the way we will be a strong country again.
