Yes, but he might encounter the same problem that a highly-qualified predecessor, Don Engen, did with SecTrans Elizabeth Dole. As long as the FAA Administrator reports to a political boss, his expertise can be frustrated.

How do you setup an intelligent 65 year old guy for a DUI?

He had to a) drink and b) get in his car and drive

He wasn't "set up" for that, he (allegedly) did it on his own. Oh yeah, and he was driving on the wrong side of the road.

It's not totally beyond the realm of possibility that someone saw him leave the bar (or wherever he was) and called it in. It's even remotely possible that someone had something to gain by doing that. But it's still not a set up, it's called "reporting a DUI"

Unless the ATA/RAA special operations/intelligence/assassination department employed a smokin hot young woman to ply him with booze...

This was on Saturday night, I think, in a county that devotes a lot of effort to drunk patrolling. What clued the officer in, according to the report, was Babbit's operating his vehicle on the left side of the parkway. Busted.

Had Randy been quick (and sober) enough, he could have opened his window as the patrolman walked up and said "I say, old boy, terribly sorry; I just forgot I was in the States".

I thought he handled it well by resigning. There's no way to keep the image and honor of being a responsible citizen high if the top dog has a bust for being an irresponsible citizen. He did seem like a nice man and was well liked.

Regardless, he broke the law(blah blah yeah he hasn't been convicted I don't care). He is in a position that those types of mistakes aren't tolerated. We all have functional brains, if you are planning to drink, you need to have your plan in place prior to the act on how you get home. I have a drink, maybe two, about once a month. When I do, I wait it out before I drive, or it's with a meal. It's not worth my ticket, my life, or anyone else's life for me to go out on the road afterwards.

Indeed, it was a bad call to drive after consuming enough alcohol to impair judgment and make a mistake that gets the attention of a police officer.

People make mistakes, and sometimes it can bite them in the behind.

The sad truth is this, when people have a lapse in judgment, often it's NOT the first time they've probably exercised said behavior. It's simply a matter of the fact that they simply got caught.
