Why don't they recycle these old birds?

They eventually do chop them up and recycle them after they've been parted out and everything and anything usable has been sold.

The Pima Air Museum used to offer a package which included a Davis-Monthan "Boneyard" tour and admission to the Titan Missile Museum (several miles south of Tucson). Here's a link:

I think at Davis-Monthan, the aircraft were kept in different categories...
1. To be parted out and recycled
2. Eventually/possibly return to flying status
3. Turned into drones (for example QF-4)
4. Eventually go to a museum or static display

I know that you can get a bus tour as mentioned previously, or you can also get a photo flight from the Tucson airport.
