Why on earth don't they.....
As I was in ORF loading up heading to DFW and wondered why the heck don't the load back to front? Maybe it is the SixSigma training in me but it makes a lot more sense than waiting on each person to do their thing then the next.... Start in the back and no one is waiting on the next person. I know you would still need to let First Class on first so that the poor people in coach can be perp walked past them so the can look down from their perch but after the are on go back to front.
So is there a reason for the way it currently is that I am not seeing?

it goes slow for two reasons. 1, no one wants to pay bag fees so they all have carry-ons to stow and 2, they know their seat is assigned so they lollygag. compare that to SWA where theres no bag fees so that cuts down on carry ons and when people see a seat they want they get their butt in it so someone else doesnt take it. they really load those planes in half the time because the passengers are motivated.

None of those methods is as efficient as the "Geffen Method:"

I like when the video states that [science can't cure stupidity]!
It seems that at SWA the passengers can't even get lined up in the right numerical order for boarding most of the time; and then often the GA don't even tell a person boarding about 10 people to early to step aside and wait. Maybe a big flashing sign ought to light up over the GA when the number is scanned showing which ticket number was scanned.
