I use sprint, coverage is as spotty as anybody else. The are 1 or 2 cities in the Greats and Grands that I only get roaming. Sprints has 4G in some airports that arent officially in their coverage and as the article I posted above says, their 3G network is not as fast as AT&T or Verizon's with the new Iphone.
The prices are good I think I pay 150 a month for 3 unlimited lines. For my 4G phone they have a $5 extra. I think the Iphone plan has a $10 per surcharge per Iphone.
In a 4G area the speed is impressive. 3G speeds are more than adequate for streaming audio. I dont do to much video.

On a related note to the op's question, what types of tablet devices does everyone use? Sounds like the iPad is by far the most popular. I know a lot of airlines are considering using them, and some are already approved for it or at least in the test process. Has anyone heard any pilots evaluate or use any other tablet?

IPad is def the way to go !!! I have had mine for a while now. And the usage is really endless once you get to know all things made for it, apps etc. There are so many apps that work for manuals and things that we use on a regular basis. Sure it's not FAA approved yet for flight deck. But sure is nice when
You need to look something up real quickly .
Plus for commuting it works great for watching movies and playing games.

I used to have the same problem at airports and in the alleys. If you have Wifi always enabled (like I do), my phone would always try to get on Wifi instead of the 3/4g network. There are always plenty of Wfi networks around and it would trump the 3/4g to get on Wifi. It would even detect the inflight go go network even though it won't work below 10K.
Even worse, thieves are now setting up their own mini cell towers which will handshake with your phone. Once connected, they place key loggers, sniffers, malware, and or download information from your phone.
Unfortunately, there is no way to truly protect yourself against this stuff. But walking around with your wifi enabled is like standing in a crowd of possible victims yelling out "pick me pick me pick me".

Sprint user here. I have an EVO 4G and love the phone and have no complaints about Sprints service (both data/signal quality and customer service). Though I do live in a large metro area with strong signal coverage nearly every where I go, but when traveling around the country through many rural areas I've still found myself with decent signal strength. Just my personal experience.
I have an android tablet (Acer A500) running Honeycomb 3.2. I like it pretty well. I chose it over an iPad due to the better connection capabilities (standard USB, mini-USB, microSDHC, HDMI, simmPort), which an iPad if understand correctly has none of that. Also, android tablets support flash/java for a full web experience. And its also considerably less expensive. I paid $380 for a 16gb tablet with all of the above features and it runs great. Plays HD movies, access to the android app market and tons of other goodies.
