Default Crash Padding in a Motor Home

It looks like I will be having to commute to SFO. A friend of mine does crash in a RV (not in SFO) and it works super well. He has a class C and loves it. I know at LAX there’s an area where a bunch of UAL pilots and MX's have 40 footers parked. It’s a little city of RV’s. I found it on Google Earth and it really is there, pretty neat.

There's an age where one just doesn't want to deal with the whole crash pad thing. I'm kind of there.

Anyway, does anybody have info on parking a motor home at an SFO employee lot and using it as a crash pad?

-Thanks

Anyone have any more information on the LAX park? If so, please shoot me a PM.

Captain at my company got arrested for jury-rigging power to his motorhome from a streetlamp in the STL parking lot years ago. Cops dragged him off a full plane...classic!!!

That's funny as hell, nice. Yea, well I guess I'm just gonna call the SFO parking folks and get their word. Don't want to pull any fast ones, just trying to look at options. It's not like I expect them to allow me to park a Class A diesel pusher, but a 20-foot-ish size Class C cab-over doesn't seem unreasonable.

We'll see. I'll keep ya'll posted. Stay tuned.

I've seen it at every base I've been at, I don't think there were rules against it or at least not enforced. You would probably want a generator and heat/AC...you could go through a lot of gas running the main engine for environmental loads.

Yea, a rig with a decent gen and AC unit, maybe one of those roof mounted ones, is mandatory. My friend calculated something along the lines of $14 bucks a night to run the heater all night during the winter months. But during spring fall and sporadically during winter/summer it's pretty comfy.

Should not cost anywhere near that with a standard propane fired system that most campers have. The blowers can run all night off a battery so you don't need to leave the generator running.

Digging around I found these articles. I know there was one in the USA Today, My personal bible of current affairs, awhile back too.

For Some Pilots, Home Is An LAX Parking Lot : NPR

I contacted the SFO parking folks and they said that it is not allowed. They even put me in contact with the American Airlines facility there saying that there was a time when some of their employees, MX and pilots would park RV's there but they nixed that too. So no dice.

But with this thread running, if anybody out there has info on an airport where this is allowed, this would be a fine place to announce it so future pilots who are looking at all their options could get an idea about their base airport.

There might be a difference between living in the crew lot and parking there...maybe you could find some nice waterfront or wooded parking spots in the area where you could legally camp for 24 hours at a pop, and only leave it in crew parking when you are really just parking.

I'm sure you could do that with a cab-over, might need to ask about a full-up rig.
