Default How good are you?

I was just wondering how you view yourself as a pilot.... not against private pilots or the average short bus rider, but against your peers.

I would have voted, but there wasn't a "Worlds Greatest Fighter Pilot" choice.

How good am I? Santa Clause always tells me around Christmas, in my hotel room, that I've been very very good. And I think his opinion trumps all.

Seriously, that's a poor question, with all due respect. We are not all great every day. Some days we are better than others. Sleep, family, money, kids, stress, time zone changes, commute all can conspire to take away a persons capacity to uphold their job to the degree we all strive for. Humans are complex and most pilots are great at compartmentalizing everything, but some times people slip. So how good am I? Pick the day. Most of the time we are all very sharp and on it, some times, we need to lean on other crew members, if you've been flying for any length of time at all, you would know.

What makes a great pilot is one who controls their stress and knows when to speak up and when it's time to step aside and take a break. A good organization will support a person doing this.

Wow, dude. I didn't intend to hit a nerve. I just was curious how people viewed themselves.

Naw man, I wasn't taking it too seriously, it's all good. Take my posts with a grain of salt. A half the time I either have too much coffee in the morning, or too much beer in the evening. Either way it's twisted.

Wink One good answer

When asked to compare himself to Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant said:
"Woody is a great coach . . . and I ain't bad." -- After the Tide beat Ohio State 35 - 6 in the 1978 Sugar Bowl.

I've always thought I was competent at what I was doing and did an above average job most of the time. Like proletariatav8r said, some days are better than others, just depends on what's going on in your life. I try to check most of my baggage at the door, but some things are harder to shake than others.

On a semi-ego-boosting related note: It's nice to have captains affirm your flying skill, especially when you put a lot of effort into your work. One of the more senior captains I flew with recently gave me a compliment I won't soon forget.

Although, on that note, there's always room for improvement. I've still got a long way to go to becoming one of the best pilots on the planet.
