The cornerstone of the NORAD/FAA procedures was and is timeliness in launching and intercepting targets. The metric they use is seconds.

Without speed, there is really no purpose in having national air defense system, is there?

Set a lot of alerts have you and have experience in the tactics and techniques of intercepts and/or the command and control required?

If you do.....I'm really surprised at your comments and would remind you of the times that we are living when there aren't airborne alerts up 24/7. The cornerstone as you say is in early warning and already having people inplace to react. Also - we don't have warp speeds yet, so nothing except the actual engagement might be over in "seconds"

Oh no! It's a grandma in a Cub! Scramble the jets! She will surely reap destruction and bring about the end of us all!

What if "grandma" Myrtle Rose was actually the infamous Abu Myrtallah Al-Rosenjani, master of disguise?

Do a little research and you will find out who put jets in the air that day. MASS, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio...to name a few.
