there is one line in that speech that really gets to me.

"Our scientific man power (is) doubling every 12 years, in a rate of growth more than 3 times that of our population as a whole".

That was almost 50 years ago. It's sad we can't say the same today.

Yes it is sad and maybe it sounds strange to say this but I,ve thought for a long time now that mankind schould be further along than where it is now.

You know what an ambitious idea would have been ?
To use the shuttle fleet to build something on the order or close to it of what was depicted as a space station in the movie '2001'.

The Space Shuttle was billed as a "Pick up truck" in space. Well, a pick up truck is a vehicle to carry small loads short distances. Seems to me it served that purpose. Unfortunately, we only pushed for a pick up truck, when we should have been striving for a vehicle of exploration.

It is hard to sell pure research (which has no promise of return other than knowledge) when certain folks believe coddling those who will not help themselves is most important.

But that is just my opinion.

I had a physics professor in college.. they guy was literally a rocket scientist. The type that did math for fun on a Saturday night. Anyway...

He spun himself off on a tangent (this was back in the 90's) on why the shuttle was such a bad idea, and why we should've continued to use the Saturn V. I don't remember his numbers, but it could lift something like twice the shuttle for 10% of the cost. Reusable isn't economical.
